Round 8 Finale of the Formula Drift Championship Leads to Wild Finish!
The 2016 Formula Drift Championship season came to an exciting conclusion this past weekend, holding its final round of the season was held at the famous Irwindale Speedway or, as those in the know call it, the “House of Drift”. The sold out event was sold out and had over 600,000 online viewers watching from all over the globe!
Thirty-two drivers prepared themselves in hopes of winning the final race of the season, but everyone’s eyes were focused on four drivers, each with a chance to win the sought after 2016 Formula Drift Title. Two-time champion Chris Forsberg led the championship standings with Fredric Aasbo, past champion Vaughn Gittin JR., and Aurimas “Odi” Bakchis all giving chase. With a 36-point lead over second, Forsberg, driver of the NOS Energy Drink Nissan 370 Z, had a solid lead coming into the final round. That lead was soon in question as Forsberg had an upset during his run against Patrick Mordaunt. Forsberg lost control and hit the outside wall preventing him from finishing the competition, giving Aasbo and Gittin a small glimmer of hope. They both battled hard for a shot of grabbing first in points. Unfortunately, Gittin was knocked out of the top 32 early, leaving Aasbo for a chance at the championship title. Aasbo, heading for an upset title win, made contact with Matt Field, preventing him from advancing to the next round. This gave Forsberg his 3rd championship title since Bakchis was too far behind in points.
Now that the crown of the 2016 Formula Drift Championship had been settled on a winner, the question remained on who would win the event at Irwindale Speedway. The final battle came down to aFe POWER sponsored Dai Yoshihara in his Subaru BR-Z, and Matt Field, driver of the Gears of War 4 Nissan S14. The final battle was a nail bitter as both teams wanted to win and finish the season on a high note. The stage was set for both drivers, in a two out of three face-off that would determine who would take home first place. Yoshihara was victorious in the first run, but he needed to come out on top again to take home the win. As Yoshihara mimicked every move Field made, a victory for Yoshihara looked obvious. Unfortunately, Yoshihara’s power steering broke on his second run, sending the aFe POWER sponsored BR-Z into the wall and cutting the run short. Field went on to win the season finisher of the Formula Drift series. While Yoshihara crashed, he still finished strong in second place at Irwindale Speedway, wrapping up the season in great stride taking 6th place in points.

aFe is proud to Introduces the Takeda axle-back exhaust system for the 2011-2016 Scion tC with the L4-2.5L engine. Tested in Corona, CA this system resulted in gains up to +6 horsepower and +5 lbs. x ft. of torque verified by our in house dyno. This system is constructed from 2-1/4" into 2-1/2” brushed finish, mandrel-bent, 304 stainless steel tubing that is 100% TIG-welded. It utilizes a high-flow, polished 304 stainless steel resonator used to absorb high pitch tones which produces a performance sound. Finishing off this exhaust system, is a massive 4.25" x 4.75" Oval double wall, angle-cut, 304 stainless steel tip in your choice of polished or gloss black with the original Takeda logo laser-etched . This system uses all factory hanger locations eliminating the need for modifications.
aFe Power is proud to introduce all new Twisted Steel headers for the 2013-2015 Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ 13-15 with the H4-2.0L engine. These high quality 304 stainless steel tubing race proven headers are available with a 200 CPSI 48-state legal catalytic convertor or in a catless “Race” version.
In testing, the catted (“street”) header gains up to +10hp and +13lbs. x ft. torque as verified by our in-house dyno. This “street” version delivers pure, race-inspired power and produces an aggressive and exciting exhaust sound during hard throttle. aFe spent countless hours of R&D to develop the perfect balance of race-inspired performance and sound with zero drone.
The unique headers are engineered with tuned 1-5/8” diameter, near equal length 304 stainless steel tubing for increased horsepower, torque and a faster “race like” throttle response.
To eliminate dead space that can cause turbulence and hinder flow, a 4-to-1 formed collector combined with optimized tube lengths help increase exhaust velocity improving flow. Includes all components for a quick hassle-free installation with no modifications necessary.
aFe Power is NOW SHIPPING the Takeda Momentum Carbon Fiber air intake system for 2013-2015 Scion FR-S with the H4-2.0L engine. In our testing, this Stage-2 intake resulted in +10 horsepower and 7 lbs. x ft. of torque max gain and outflowed the factory intake by 64%.
This highly engineered system features a one-piece, lightweight 2x2 twill weave high gloss carbon fiber housing and a one-piece intake tube.
The high flow performance air filter uses a unique (patent-pending) flange retention design that allows the filter to be securely mounted to the housing without any hardware. The kit comes complete with all necessary hardware for a hassle-free installation.
aFe is proud to introduce the Takeda cat-back exhaust system for the 2013-2015 Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ with the H4-2.0L engine. This Takeda exhaust in testing, produced gains up to +5 horsepower and +6 lbs. x ft. of torque on our in house dyno. This cat-back exhaust system is constructed from 2-1/2” mandrel bent, 304 stainless steel which is 100% TIG-welded for added strength and durability.
The system also uses dual high-flow, polished 304 stainless steel mufflers, allowing for improved performance across the power band while maintaining a great tone. To finish off this exhaust system are dual 4-3/4” double wall, slash-cut, 304 stainless steel Takeda laser-etched tips.
